Sergeant Rogath Steven John had all reasons to smile with dignity when he
returned from South Africa where he participated in the Southern African Police
Chief Community Organization (SARPCCO) games held in Pretoria.
He came home brandishing a Gold medal and two Silver medals that he was awarded
in the athletics meet in which Tanzania emerged the overall winner.
According to the Tanzanian team coach, Coplo Simon Quamunga, Sergeant John
excelled in the 5,000 metres race ahead of Zimbabwean, Abel Ghinkoko who held
the record. John bagged his first gold medal in the games.
Sergeant John not contented with a single medal positioned himself in the
forefront of the 21-
kilometre half marathon and secured second position that earned him a Silver
medal. The first position was clinched by his compatriot, Francis Naali from the
Police College in Moshi.
Both athletes also won accolades in cross country run, Naali emerging first and
Sergeant John second. The brilliant performance by John in the long distance
race earned him the games best athlete award.
In football, Joseph Jeraldi also of Tanzanian was voted the best player.
The games participants included Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Angola, Namibia,
Mauritius, Lesotho, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and South Africa.
The next venue for the biannual games is Mauritius in 2007.
