Arusha Meru offers free A-Level studies to top notch students

By Staff Reporter

The management for the Arusha Meru Secondary School, is intending to exempt from tuition fees all the AMSS students who obtain First Division in the O-Level National Examinations, as long as the said students will opt to continue with their Advanced level streams at the same campus.

This was revealed last weekend by the school manager, Brij Behal during the occasion in which, the four decade old Arusha Meru Secondary was conducting its 41st graduation ceremony for its 100 ordinary level students, who have just completed their four academic years of secondary level education at the school. Among the graduands were 59 girls and 41 boys.

Since the school was established in 1964, the number of students who have been enrolled for its Ordinary Level classes has reached 10,000. Arusha Meru introduced Form Five and Six classes in 1996 and so far a total of 1000 Advanced level students have joined in this higher education stream.

Remarkable performances in terms of drama, traditional dancing, fashion shows, rap music and other events colored the entire affair, in which the graduating students were also presented with school leaving certificates.

Colman Ngalo, an advocate with the High Court of Tanzania was the guest of honor at the event. A rather coincidental move, because Advocate Ngalo was once a teacher at the school. "It was a part time in 1966-67 when was a second year student at the University of East Africa -UEA (Now University of Dar-es-salaam)."

Advocate Ngalo who happened to have been on short leave at that time, was approached by the school management to assist them in teaching Geography and English at Arusha Meru secondary and since then, he was not to step at the institution until last week when this other management asked him to be guest of honor at the 41st graduation.

Meanwhile the first phase for the proposed Arusha Meru English-Medium Primary school is set to be soon completed, ready for the maiden enrollment in January next year. According to Behal, the Tsh.400 million complex will consist of 14 classrooms, a library, a computer lab, one staff room block, a headmaster office, a pantry and toilets.

The Primary School which like its Secondary sibling, will operate under the Arusha Education and Cultural Society (AECS) will also include, Nursery and Kindergarten school facilities. "We want the children to get high quality education right from Nursery level to High school under the same roof," said Behal, who is also the chairman of AECS.
