Old boy moves in to assist Sekei Primary School

For local businessman, Fanuel Said Roika, it is all for nostalgic value when he
returns to his former School, Sekei Primary and assist in the ongoing
development for the institution's structures. Last weekend, Roika once more
pledged an additional Tsh.1million, in cash and building material to complete
the school's construction of toilet facilities.
Roika who comes from the successful, Roika mining family, which owns among other
investments, the Roika Bureau-de-change and the popular Summit Club, used to be
a pupil at Sekei Primary, where he completed class seven in 1987. Even after he
went into business, the local investor has always returned to the school,
helping its management with various construction projects.
The school apparently, is in dire need of toilet facilities. According to the
out-going students, a total of 50 latrine holes are currently needed, 48 being
for pupils and 2 for teachers. The on-going construction of the toilet block for
additional 20 latrine holes had temporarily stopped due to lack of funds.
Last Saturday, Sekei Primary conducted a graduation ceremony for its, 114 pupils
completing their seven year academic journey, which started in 1999 with 217
enrolment. More than 103 split off along the way, to form another School, the
Naurei Primary, leaving 62 girls and 52 boys who sat for the final examinations
last September.
In 2004 the Sekei Primary School was officially divided into two, forming the
new Naurei Primary, which is even bigger than the parent institution. Occupying
the newly built classrooms wings and some of the southern located, old buildings
Naurei boasts over 1100 pupils. The old school, Sekei Primary meanwhile has 1040
pupils in total.
Located at Sokon II ward, in Arumeru District, Sekei Primary School was
established in 1953, then serving few pupils in two classrooms. Today the school
has so much expanded that even its board chairman, Simon Marunda said they are
contemplating to start to 'build' upwards, adding storeys of classroom blocks on
top of the existing ones.
For the last year's National Examination results for class seven, Sekei Primary
recorded 71 pass marks from 39 girls and 32 boys' candidates. Previously in the
2003 exams, the School had recorded 60 passes. The results, according to the
headmistress, Phylis Maimu, could have been even better were it not for the fact
that, the school experiences shortages of teaching staff.
Sekei Primary also experiences shortages of desks as well. The school has a
total 267 desks, but the actual requirement is of 515 desks, therefore in order
for these pieces of classroom furniture to be considered adequate, a total of
248 desks are still needed.
