Wine plant awards maths best student

Arusha-based banana winery will every year award the best student in Mathematics
from Oloirien Primary School in the Arusha Municipality.
Mr. Adolf Olomi, General Manager of Banana Investment Limited made this pledge
last Saturday during the 28th Graduation Ceremony of the School.
Mr. Olomi, also Chairman of the School Committee said that his firm has opted
for mathematics subject as experience has indicated a child who performs well in
the subject from the early stage, develops to be capable of doing well in other
subjects.
He said he had taken the initiative so as to enhance competition among the
children and to promote more interest in mathematics.
This year Theresia Wilfred emerged the winner of the Banana Investment Award for
her outstanding performance in mathematics in standard Seven.
About 169 students were awarded with primary School leaving certificates in the
ceremony that was presided by Mr. Anthon Mushi, an Education Officer of the
Arusha Municipal Council. Among them 82 were girls while boys were 77.
Mr. Mushi commended residents of the Oloirien Ward for their enthusiasm in
constructing new classrooms. .
Earlier, Mr. Zebedayo Mollel, Headmaster of the school said that his school
which was established in 1977, has 1,826 children and 42 teachers but is in dire
need of ten classrooms and three hundred desks amongst other necessary
furnitures.
Mr. Mollel also lamented that most students who pass their primary school final
examinations, do not get the opportunity to continue with secondary school
education due to lack of vacancy in public schools. Last year, he said, that
among 89 students, who passed their examinations, it was only 24r, who were
selected to join the public secondary schools.
