Forty four students last Sunday graduated from the University of Arusha, a Christian University situated at Usa- River in Arumeru district.

During the ceremony presided by the Minister for Water and Livestock Development, Edward Lowassa, the graduands were awarded Degree Diplomas and Certificates in various disciplines.

Addressing graduands, the university community and guests, Mr. Lowassa commended the Seventh- day Adventist Church for establishing the Unversity of Arusha. He said that the University was among the 27 institutions of higher learning in the country and as a christian Unversity, it was expected to produce first rate graduates who are well equiped to meet the challenges posed by
globalization.

" Our nation has no room for mediocre people, we need graduates with well developed worldwide vision, for capacity building, consolidation of human rights,
sustainable development, democracy, and peace, " said Lowassa.

He also pointed out that the University of Arusha like any other institution of
higher learning was faced with a number of challenges and difficulties, prominent among these was the need to improve campus infrastructure as well as sourcing of qualified teaching staff and support personel.
He urged for enhancement and preservation of quality in teaching, improved staff development, research and other related services.

The vice Chancellor of the University of Arusha Dr Vincent Goddard commended the many Church leaders, government officials, and other development
partners for facilitating the creation and the establishment of the University of Arusha.

He said that the University of Arusha's development

partners were like strong men on whose shoulders short men could stand and see further than they would have done by themselves.

" Our sustained determination and the compulsion to move forward with a clear vision towards given goals has made this University what it is today" said the vice Chancellor Dr Goddard. He said that what used to be a small college situated in a rural village had grown and had become a chartered University in the country. " We train people with the aim of converting the mind into a living fountain and
not a reservoir," said the Vice Chancellor Dr Goddard.

Present during the graduation ceremony were, Prof Timothy McDonald Vice Chancellor University of Eastern Africa Baraton- Kenya, Steven Bina the Chancellor University of Arusha, Elias Wawa Lali, the District Commisioner of
Arumeru and the Regional education officer for Arusha Region Mr Massawe.
