For the Police Officer John Agala, aged 41 years, his 1st of April arrest by the
Anti-corruption officers, should have been a fools' day gimmick, but it wasn't,
the PCB men were serious and whisked him into custody.
John Agala, the Officer In Charge (OCS) for the Bwawani Police post of Arumeru,
is is alleged to have asked for monetary bribe from a citizen who was facing
charges at his station, located within the Lucy Estates.
Deputy Commander for the Regional Prevention of Corruption Bureau (PCB), Allen
Kasamala, said the officer was arrested while receiving a Tsh. 20,000 cash bribe
from the accused person, at the Lokii market area.
According to Kasamala, the police officer had previously asked for Tsh. 50,000
from the accused who gave him the down payment of Tsh.50,000 with an agreement
that the remaining sum was to be settled on Friday, the 1st of April.
Before making it to the rendezvous, however, the person went to PCB and reported
the matter and the Anti graft officers planned the trap which led to his arrest.
He stayed under custody for two days, then got released on Tsh.2 million bail.
Regional Police Commander James Kombe has confirmed the arrest, adding that,
should the investigations find the officer with a case to answer, then Agala
will face charges before a special court for tarnishing the 'good name' of the
police force.
Meanwhile, a 30- year- old Primary School teacher, has been sentenced to serve
30 years in jail, after being found guilty of raping one of his female pupils, a
girl aged 16 years.
Joseph Meriseki, who used to teach at Mkonoo Primary School, in Arusha
Municipality, will also be enduring some six strokes of cane, to supplement his
jail sentence, which was meted out this week by the Resident Magistrate, Felista
Mushi.
