TEMDO launches strategic plan targeting poverty eradication

by Staff Reporter

Arusha- based Tanzania Engineering and Manufacturing Design Organization (TEMDO), has launched a three-year corporate strategic plan that is likely to see the organization become the leader in mechanical engineering design in Tanzania.
The plan which covers 2004/5 to 2006/7 was launched last Friday by the Regional Administrative Secretary Mr. Charles Kileo on behalf of Dr. Juma Ngasongwa, Minister for Industries and Trade.
TEMDO, one of the few research and development institutions under the Ministry of Industries and Trade, was established in 1980 to design, adapt and develop prototypes of machinery/equipment, and to promote commercial manufacture of proven prototypes, among other objectives.
Mr. Kileo told TEMDO's staff and guest, who attended the plan's launching ceremony at the organization's offices in Njiro, that the plan is in tandem with the nation's development Vision 2025 and other sectoral policies which aim at enhancing access to knowledge, appropriate technology and resources to the majority of the people to enable them address their basic needs to sustain their livelihood and development.
"Policies being pursued by the government present enormous opportunities for all R & D institutions to effectively participate in their implementation", Mr. Kileo said.
He also noted that the National Strategy for Growth and Reduction of Poverty (NSGRP) commonly referred to as MUKUKATA, whose implementation starts during 2025/6 provides even greater opportunities for R&D institutions to formulate viable and implementable work programmes which will contribute to overall growth of the economy and poverty reduction.
The Corporate Strategic Plan, which is TEMDO's third, realises the need for the organization to strengthen provision of its engineering innovative services to the manufacturing sector.
To finance the plan, a total budget of Tsh.520 million, to cover three years, has been worked out of which Tsh.320 million is for strengthening working facilities.
TEMDO's Director General, Engineer G. Msolla said their focus is to contribute to poverty eradication efforts and private sector development.
