East African veteran soccer bonanza set for March 6Municipality wards officials Vs Wazee Club to raise curtainby Nassib Majamba The Sheikh Thabit Kombo soccer bonanza for the East African football veterans is set to be held here in Arusha from the 6th to the 15th of March. A total of nine teams all made up of veteran players from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania Mainland and the Isles are expected to take part in the games. Organized by the Tanzania Sports Catalyst (TASCA) the soccer bonanza is being conducted as yet another effort in the fight against HIV-AIDS spreads. The Director for TASCA, Suleiman Mathew said the games were earlier scheduled to take place in Mwanza city but the participating teams requested the venue to be shifted to Arusha as it is more convenient. According to Mathew, the Arusha venue would not only be more accessible to teams from Uganda and Kenya, but the move would also save them money in terms of travelling expenses. Mathew also explained that even the kick-off has also changed form January 24 to March 6 to give way to the All African soccer cup. He mentioned the teams for the Thabit Kombo Cup as Zanzibar veterans, Morogoro veterans, Young Africans Simba Sports, Uganda veterans, Kenya veterans, Pan African, Pamba FC and Arusha All Stars. Former Tanzanian prime minister, Samwel Malecela is expected to officially launch the soccer games. Malecela is also the patron of TASCA. The opening match to curtain-raise the event will be between Arusha regional officials through the Wazee Football Club playing against the Arusha Municipal Ward officials. The following day, Wazee wa Kazi from Kenya will play
against Young African veterans from Tanzania, then Simba veterans versus
Zanzibar veterans and Arusha All Stars playing against Pamba on March 8.
