Freak floods kill tour driver

by Nyamanoko Bwire and Matilda Kirenga

Heavy rains which fell in Ngorongoro district on January 24 caused floods that drowned one Benard Warioba (45) a driver with Shidolya tour company.

The driver met his death when his vehicle, a Land Rover Tdi with plate numbers TZM 7802 belonging to the Arusha- based tour company, stuck in murky waters while attempting to cross a raging river.

According to police reports Warioba disembarked from the vehicle in order to try and push it from the river being assisted by another person, Samuel Emmanuel who was travelling with him in the car.

A sudden gush of water swept the driver off his feet throwing him into the river before the current took him away.

The water then swept away the Land Rover and later also the passenger who however, managed to escape but is still in critical condition. He is admitted at Ngaresero dispensary where he is undergoing treatment.

Torrential rains have been falling in Arusha region and various other parts of the country throughout January recording a sudden change in climate, since the first month of the year is usually dry.
