‘Chagga boy’ retains boxing title as opponent hits metal post

by Hamza Kalmera

The national Light Heavy boxing champion, Andrew George a.k.a. Chagga Boy, has managed to retain his title after sending his opponent, Bernard Simon, out of the ring with a Technical Knock-Out (TKO) at the sixth round.

This was despite the fact that the opponent, Bernard Simon, rejoices by his boxing name of "Cyborg", which means an indomitable futurist, powerful human-like machine.

The boxing event took place in Arusha last Sunday, at the Regional CCM building, multipurpose hall. The match was a replay of the boxing event which had previously taken place on the 8th of August at the climax of "Nane Nane" show in Njiro.

The Nane Nane boxing event however, was botched by a sudden riot from spectators, who started to pelt the boxers with beer cans. The bout was held at the Tanzania Breweries Limited pavilion and the patrons were too drunk to watch a boxing match.

During last week’s replay, Cyborg sustained a broken right arm after his fist missed Chagga Boy and slammed onto a metal post of the arena.

This incident was the last straw for the Cyborg guy, who had to call off his attempt and living the defending champion, Chagga Boy smiling all the way to the bank with Tsh.300,000 as his cash prize for retaining his boxing title.

Still, Bernard Simon, was given Tsh.200,000 for his efforts in the boxing match which was organized by JJ Promotions and sponsored by JIT Gems, Tanzania Breweries, Arusha Parking System and other local sports lovers.

Guest of honour during the boxing event was the Deputy Mayor for the Arusha municipality, Retired Major, Alhaj Mohammed Mollel.
