Good governance symposium brings together 60 delegates

The Arusha based MS-Training Centre for Development Co-operation (TCDC), in association with the Development Studies Centre (DSC) Kimmage Manor, Ireland, recently brought together about 60 delegates from six African countries, for a two-day symposium on Good Local Governance,

The symposium was held at the MS-TCDC campus in Usa river area of Arumeru district.

Participants for the symposium which took place on the 23rd and 24th of August, hailed from Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia and Zimbabwe, with the event entitled, "Good Governance in Tanzania - Implications for Capacity Building". It was coordinated by Monsiapile Kajimbwa (MS-TCDC) and Alais Morindat (DSC).

Regional Commissioner for the Manyara region (RC), Anatoli A. Tarimo was among the local participants, whose list included representatives from the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), Anti Corruption Coalition of Uganda (ACCU), Zimbabwe Institute of Public Administration (ZIPAM), Rwandese Association of Local Government Authorities (RALGA) and Transparency International - Zambia (TIZ).

The MS-TCDC Principal, Ulla Godtfredsen officially opened the symposium on Monday. The introductory session which ran under the theme "What is Good Local Governance?" was presented by Eilish Dillon also from DSC Kimmage.

Benedict Kasege, from the Tanzania’s Local Government Reform Programme of the President’s Office -Regional Administration and Local Government (LGRP-PO-RALG) gave the first Thematic Presentation on reforms and Decentralized Governance.

Other presenters included Hamis Singano, a professional economist; Basillius Nchimbi, Secretary General for the Association of Local Authorities in Tanzania (ALAT); and Jane Nabbuya , Assistant Executive Secretary in-charge of programmes at the Development Network of Indigenous Voluntary Associations (DENIVA) based in Kampala, Uganda. Prof. Jassy Kwesiga who works with SNV-Netherlands Development Organization was the coordinator of the portfolio team in Arusha.

The symposium was facilitated by Tom Campbell of DSC, John Musyoka of MS-TCDC, with its introductory note being given by Prudence Kaijage of MS-TCDC, Arusha.
