Regional Library hosts National Book Festival‘Reading Begins at Home’by Nyamanoko Bwire The 13th National Book Week Festival will be held at the Arusha Regional Library grounds from Monday the 6th to Sunday the 12th of September this year. Regional Librarian, Ms Sophia Laboke said this year’s Book week theme is "Reading Begins at Home" and the seven day event will include displays of various publications from stakeholders and reading tents for both children and adults. A total of 16 local schools, including nine primary and seven secondary schools have been selected to fully participate in the reading tent. The schools are: Arusha Modern, Arusha School, Uhuru Primary, Levolosi Primary, all from the municipality and Sekei Primary, Enyuata, Loruvani, Moshono and Green Acres from Arumeru. Secondary schools chosen to take part in the reading tent are: Kaloleni, Arusha-Meru, Sinon and Arusha Secondary from the municipality, Ilboru, Moshono, Oldadai and Arumeru secondary school from Arumeru district. Activities for primary school participants will include general reading of books and magazines, paintings, drawings, moulding and poster designing. The pupils will also be involved in story telling and drama. Secondary school activities will include, quizzes, book reviews and debating. The books selected for book talks and reviews are: Chinua Achebe’s "No Longer at Ease" and Henry Ole Kulet’s "Is it Possible?". There will also be Swahili literatures such as "Ngoswe" and "Hiba ya Wivu.". The National Book Week Festival will officially be opened by the Arusha Regional Commissioner, Mohammed Babu, on the 6th of September. The Arusha District Commissioner, Fulgence Saria will close the event on the 12th of September. According to Ms Laboke, the objectives of the book festival are to develop and promote the culture of reading, create awareness on the importance and power of reading and provide leisure in book reading.
