Petty traders speak of their woes at the central market

Petty traders at the central market place recently formed an association to spearhead their interests. The traders are facing a myriad of problems including what they termed as harassment from tax collectors. Their grievances in a nutshell:

  • Constantine John, Trader, Central Market
  • Olympia Ngowi, Trader - Central Market
  • We decided to form our own association so that local traders may have a platform to air their grievances and solve our problems.

The problems include being surprised by the Council on various forms of taxation, having our merchandise confiscated and the fact that security here leaves much to be desired.

The Council nowadays charge tariffs even from unregistered traders who trespass into the market facility thus blessing their existence here.

We also have the problem of some traders not sticking to their places of business instead they move from one area to another causing chaotic confusion. Again, the market lacks toilet facilities.

The daily Municipal tax of Tsh.200 in addition to various other charges, just came up but wasn’t even indicated in the contract forms.

Again, the issue of bringing militia around to harass people is also a breach of that contract, because their presence here scares away our customers.

Existing toilets have also been converted into shops so the market is currently operating without toilets, which is a threat to health.
