‘Uzunguni’ residents: Live and let live

Efforts by the Sustainable Arusha Programme to green Arusha are paying dividend. Conserved trees and new ones planted in recent years are even attracting small animals to river valleys and backyards, as it used to be before the environment was destroyed by ignorant residents. Some people, especially in the so- called Uzunguni area along Kanisa and Haile Selassie Roads, are now waging a campaign to kill all those animals. Are they right?

  • Following recent efforts to plant trees in the municipality, and especially along Themi river valley, there have been great developments of local green belts to an extent of attracting wildlife in town. So far we’ve had, baboons, squirrels, different types of birds, butterflies and other insects, enjoying the newly grown trees. However, we now have this problem of people killing these animals under claims that they are destroying crops. It is illegal to cultivate along river banks, so people should leave these animals alone, we have already contacted the Wildlife Department so that they may address this issue.

We’ve had problems with baboons invading our homes, destroying satellite dishes, removing roofing tiles and even stealing foodstuffs from the houses.

The animals have also been destroying crops and in fact, we already reported this matter to the Wildlife offices who assisted us by reducing their numbers by shooting some down.

But I appeal to my fellow residents not to take upon themselves and kill these baboons, for they are our natural heritage.

It is rather unfortunate that, there are people who still cultivate crops along the Themi river valley.

The area should have been left to flourish as it had started to, that’s why birds, butterflies and little animals were attracted to the area.

We appeal to local authorities that these people who farm in the area, be driven away to save the environment.
