US-based Foundation donates 280 wheelchairs

by Staff Writer

The Wheel-chair Foundation (WF) of the United States has once more donated wheel-chairs to disabled people in Simanjiro, Monduli and Kondoa districts.

A total of 280 wheel-chairs were officially handed out to the beneficiaries by the Assistant Director of Distribution, Ms Charli Butterfield, at the Lolkisale Catholic Parish this week

The WF wheel-chair donation was made through the Conservation Foundation (CF) Trust, which is a non government organization based in Arusha.

Conservation Foundation deals with community development and resource conservation. The organization is funded by private donations through Tanzania Big Game Safaris Limited, Tandala Hunting Safaris (1998) Ltd., Tanzania Hunting and Safaris (2003) Ltd., and the Ramoni family.

The Wheel-chair Foundation, based in California , is a charitable organization. It has not only donated the 280 chairs, but also fully paid for the consignment transportation, being assisted by the Behering family.

Founded in 2000, the Wheel-chair Foundation has already distributed close to 226,000 wheel-chairs among disabled people in over 100 countries worldwide.

In November last year, the Wheel-chair Foundation donated a total of 50 wheel-chairs, 36 of which were distributed in Simanjiro and 14 in Monduli districts, but as it turned out, the number of needy persons in those and other areas, was staggeringly high, calling for more chairs.

Part of this year’s 280 wheel-chairs were distributed in the Simanjiro area of Manyara region, but various other rural areas will also get the chairs after this week’s distribution, according to Jan Ramoni, the Director of Tanzania Big Game Safaris.

Among last year’s beneficiaries, was the former Army Captain with the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF), Cuthbert Msafiri, who suffered a stroke paralysis and his daughter Grace.
