Front Page Pupils sit on cement blocks in school without desksby Novatus Makunga
School children at Engatani primary school, Makiba ward, Arumeru district are being forced to sit on cement blocks in classrooms with dirty floors mostly built by Maasai women residents of the area. This came to limelight recently after a visit by the Arusha Regional CCM Chairman, Mr.Yona Nnko, who was in the district to inspect the progress of various development projects including education, water, roads and health as outlined earlier in the Party’s program. At Engalaoni primary school, with pupils from Standard One to Five, it was discovered that students were sitting on pieces of cement blocks apart from one single student who sat at his desk which was bought by his parents. The councillor for Makiba ward, Ms Mwanaidi Kim, noted that the school which has 300 pupils , was built by Maasai women of Engalaoni. She said that after seeing the plight of students who had to walk long distances, she urged the matrons to rally together and build the school. Ms. Kim explained that the elementary school program, was able to contribute nine million shillings but most of this was allegedly stolen by a teacher who put the money into a private account. Mr. Nnko asked all residents of Makiba not to leave full responsibility for the school with the women alone. Instead, they should ensure that the children had desks so that they could study properly. He also said that he would raise the matter with the proper authorities, including the Arumeru District Council as well as with Mr. Mohammed Babu, the Regional Commissioner of Arusha.
