Why EAC headquarters should not be at the AICC ‘backyard’

Some individuals are eager to see the EAC headquarters built next to the AICC so that visitors to Arusha are struck with awe when they see the proposed architectural marvel. During the latest East African Legislative Assembly meeting, a member pointed out that the chairperson of the Architect’s Association of East Africa has dismissed the idea of building the headquarters at the AICC backyard as nonsense. Donor funds already made available should be used more wisely that means where there is adequate space, even beyond the reach of Arusha town centre visitors’ eyes.

Arusha still has plenty of open spacious space, such that there is no logic in putting up another huge building next to the International Conference Centre complex. The EAC building may also need to be expanded in later days and this would require ample space, so if it is to be built, then the proposed headquarters would definitely need to be constructed in the outskirts of Arusha town.

Besides, Arusha will soon become a city, thus such structures need to be well spaced out.

The idea of constructing the new East African Community (EAC) headquarters adjacent to the Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC) is a misguided one.

The two structures will be too squeezed together. Mind you, there is already this problem of traffic jams on the road leading to AICC. Most of the vehicles are owned by EAC, ICTR and AICC staff plus those of private people working in the building.

When the EAC building is complete, then the jams are likely to get worse. It will be better if the headquarters are built a few kilometres from Arusha where there is spacious and unutilised land.

It is not advisable for the proposed EAC headquarters to be built near the AICC, because the centre now hosts that UN Tribunal.

Now, with the current safety risks imposed on international institutions, I find the idea to be a dangerous one. The EAC should build their headquarters away from the town centre.
