Write to: The Editor, Arusha Times, P.O. Box 212, Arusha. E-mail: arushatimes@habari.co.tz LET US FIGHT DRUG ABUSEDrug abuse we think is something that normally happens to somebody else and not us. We have ignored the topic of drug abuse in our community and especially among our young people for quite long and indeed we might pay dearly for this not long from now. The recent admission by the Regional Commissioner Mr. Mohamed Babu that indeed drug abuse is a problem especially in schools is a clear indication that something needs to be done. We are talking a lot about HIV/AIDS pandemic but can you imagine what would the situation look like if we had started earlier. Likewise, unless we move swiftly to help our children and young people on substance abuse, then let’s get prepared for the worst. Drugs contribute a lot to HIV/AIDS, but nobody cares to talk about them. The abuse of drugs has caused family breakdowns yet we have ignored talking about this problem. Our young boys and girls are going mad and dying of abusing drugs yet we are waiting for somebody from abroad to come with funds so that we can start an NGO dealing with drug abuse. Let us continue waiting and so many Brenda Fasiis will continue going crazy and dying. At least I have some substantial experience after conducting several workshops, seminars, talks and having authored a book on substance abuse. I feel I can be of help to some organizations, institutions, and organized youth groups in educating them on the dangers of drug abuse. If anyone needs my help, I will be very much willing to assist.
