Kinana graces launch of Press Club protocolby Arusha Times Reporter
The Arusha Press Club (APC), threw a special party last Tuesday night, in which the organization’s new leadership and Constitution were officially launched. Various top dignitaries from all over East Africa attended the occasion which was held at the Golden Rose hotel along Colonel Middleton road. The Speaker for the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), Abdulrahman Kinana, graced the event as guest of honour. Kinana is also the APC Patron. The new Arusha Press Club official line-up includes, the Chairman, Nicodemus Ikonko of the Hirondelle News Agency, Vice Chairman, Elisha Mayalla, a specialized writer on tourism , who also works with the Mount Meru Hotel, and Secretary General, Habiba Swedi, Radio One Correspondent. Others are the assistant secretary general, Erasto Jones, a freelance writer; the treasurer, Nerbert Mramba also a freelance journalist but currently taking law studies and the deputy treasurer, Valentine Marc Nkwame of the Arusha Times. The APC Executive Committee members includes, Suckdev Chhatbar of Internews, Said Njuki, of Business Times, Abdul Mukhtar Bolyao, of Star Television, David Frank and Grace Msovela. That team will lead the journalist organization for the next three years, according to the newly launched APC Constitution. Launching the new document, the EALA Speaker insisted on field specialization among local journalists, more training and urged media houses to provide conducive working environment and better pay for their staff. Kinana also lamented that most news reports appearing in the Tanzanian media lack research. The launching party was also attended by Regional Commissioner, Mohamed Babu, The Rwandan envoy to the UN Tribunal, Aloyce Mutabingwa, the East African Community (EAC) Press Officer, Magaga A lot, the Public Relations Officer for the UN-ICTR, Bocar Sy and the project director of Hirondelle News Agency, Pierre Briand. Others were, the members of EA legislative Assembly, Max Shamalla (Kenya), Captain Dudu (Uganda), Mabere Nyaucho Marando (Tanzania), Beatrice Shelukindo (Tanzania), Dr. Harrison Mwakyembe (Tanzania) and Lydia Wanyoto (Uganda). The APC also awarded special certificates to various people who have been supporting the club activities among them the managing Director of AICC, Patrick Tsere, the Director of TANAPA, Gerald Bigurube and Awio Meleu Mrema of the Impala Hotel.
