The Lutheran Diocese in Arusha will build a modern consultant hospital in Arusha's town centre at the cost of US $ 3,500,000.

Bishop Tomas Laiser of the Lutheran Diocese in Arusha on Sunday May 23 dedicated the site where the hospital will be built. The Bishop said that about US $ 2,575,000 has been donated by friends and partners from the United States of America and the rest would be raised in Arusha.

The 78-bed facility to be known as the Arusha Lutheran Medical Centre is an off-spring of Lutheran Selian Hospital located at Ngaramtoni on the outskirts of Arusha.

It will offer full consultant medical services such as Cardiology, Urology, Eye Care, Dental, Pediatric, a modern surgical theatre and central sterilization unit, Obstetric, among others. Supportive services include X-ray, Ultrasound and CT Scan. Others are a pharmacy, laboratory, mortuary, chapel and kitchen.

The dedication ceremony also marked the beginning of ground breaking whereby bulldozers and heavy-duty equipment started preparing the area for construction work to take-off.

The Arusha Medical Centre will be located in the same compound of the Selian Town Clinic at Levolosi.
The Selian Lutheran Hospital, through dispensaries, community health and clinics has strived for nearly fifty year to meet the health needs of the people of Arusha.

" The desire to serve is now calling Selian to expand its services in the densely populated and rapidly growing city of Arusha", says the project write-up adding that patients living in Arusha, clients of the clinic, prepaid health care plan members, and their wider community are all requesting and even demanding an even greater number of medical and surgical services in the city.

To implement the project, Bishop Laiser has already filed a request to the government, among other, for a permit to collect donations in and around Arusha, blanket Vat exemption for building materials and rehabilitation of the roads around the planned hospital facility.
