Shame to St. James parish, Bravo Bishop MakundiDear Editor, I read with great consternation the comments of Mrs. Mercy Rweraura that the "conflict" between St. James parish and Bishop Simon Makundi is not over since the Bishop did not ask for forgiveness before the Church for advocating the use of condoms in the fight against AIDS ( Arusha Times April 10-16, 2004). I say "Shame!" to the parish for persisting in their misguided and irresponsible expectations and demands. And "BRAVO" to Bishop Makundi for standing firm!! Is it reasonable to demand an apology from a courageous man
whose only concern is to SAVE LIVES? Let the parish as well as the leaders of
the Tanzanian Anglican Church - and leaders of other Tanzanian churches, for
that matter- contemplate the fact that, in this day and age, the internet
carries their incredibly unenlightened views to the four corners of the global
village and helps to characterize our beloved Tanzania as a truly backward
country. H.J. Schueler, Professor, Toronto, Canada
Why are they trying to ditch ‘Geneva of Africa?’Dear Editor, I was and still am the admirer of the slogan "Arusha The Geneva of Africa", a term that was coined and crowned to our small city Arusha by the US president of Bill Clinton when he visited Arusha for the land mark peace agreement signing ceremony for Burundi at the AICC. However, I am disheartened by the recent developments where all the signs; all indications to the famous statement at the AICC have been scrubbed clean as if the AICC made a grave mistake in pioneering or making sure that the catchphrase is never lost. Whatever reasoning they used to reach that decision, it is utterly wrong and uncreative. It is of course very clear that Arusha can never be Geneva and indeed Bill Clinton never meant that. The community deserves an explanation for the cheap decision that has been made by the AICC Management. This was made even more crucial to me when I was following the coverage of 40th Union Celebrations on 26th April 2004 in Zanzibar through TV and the crowning of Arusha as " The Geneva of Arusha" was cited as one of the landmarks in 40 years history of Tanzania. I stand to be corrected. Asantael Ernest.
