Local farmers could be using genetically modified seeds

by Nyamanoko Bwire

Tanzania may not have adopted the genetically modified food products or the GM technology, but there is a possibility that some local farmers are using genetically modified seeds unknowingly.

This was pointed out by the Executive Director of Envirocare, Loyce Lema during an interview with the Arusha Times at Usa River this week.

According to the director, the scarcity of seeds in the country has been driving farmers to import seeds from other areas such as Kenya, where already GM technology on food production is being practised.

As the result, genetically modified seeds could be grown in the country but without following the relevant specifications, procedures and technology.

A special workshop on policy and advocacy on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in Tanzania, was held at the MS-Training Centre for Development Cooperation (TCDC) in Usa River last week.

During the workshop, Lema emphasised that, GMO productions if used well, could actually solve food problem in the country especially on short period farming.

She however, reminded that, there is a negative side to GM products.
