by Nyamanoko Bwire

Meru primary school has just set a record of being the first Swahili-medium public school in Arusha region to have a fully equipped computer laboratory.

Courtesy of the school’s benefactors, Mr and Mrs Andy S. Laursen, Meru primary recently received 15 brand new computers valued at about 33m/- (US$ 30000).

The school’s headmaster, Bryceson Nassary listed the computer equipment consignment as 13 desk tops, two lap tops, two large printers, two small printers, one photocopy machine, a scanner and 13 computer tables, all donated by the American couple.

Headmaster Nassary, explained that his school was not only grateful to their benefactors but also to another couple, whom he mentioned as Mr and Mrs John Kingsley who found them the donors. According to the head teacher, Meru primary has also invested 650,000/- to renovate a classroom which now serves as computer laboratory for the school.

The computers were presented to the school this week at a brief ceremony which was held at the school premises and attended by various guests.

Regional Commissioner, Mohamed Babu, who graced the occasion conceded, "Meru primary is going to be the first local school to own a modern computer laboratory, not just in the municipality, or Arusha region but actually in Tanzania."

Meru primary, located along Makongoro road in Pangani street of the municipality, was established in 1965 and is among the top performing, government owned schools in the region.

Last year, Meru had 267 pupils who sat for Class Seven examinations, 159 of whom passed and among them 50 were chosen to join various secondary schools.

As for the computer studies, the school headmaster explained that teachers will be trained first so that they can later on train their pupils.

"There are no computer lessons in the national school curriculum", said Nassary, adding that, computer training would be limited to the Class Seven pupils, to prepare them for life as they leave the school.
