"Kilemakyaro":
a word from the Chaga dialect meaning impossible journey. The early
settlers in the area were unable to pronounce the word correctly,
hence Kilimanjaro.
History
In
1909 a German Settler established the coffee farm and built the main
house at Kilemakyaro. Following the second world war, the British
took over the property and handed it back to the locals in
1975.
In 1991, a private company purchased part of the farm comprising a
total of 30 acres surrounding the original house which has now been
restored as part of the lodge. The rest of the farm has been
replanted with Arabica coffee. The fresh produce for the lodge is
supplied by the lodge farm.
The Lodge
Kilemakyaro
Mountain Lodge, strategically located at the foot of Mount
Kilimanjaro in the township of Moshi. Surrounded by verdant gardens,
with spectacular views of "Kili" and Mount Meru, the lodge
is a perfect place to relax in-between safaris and mountain climbing
expeditions. The lodge environs boast a large number of bird species
as well as butterflies.
Kilemakyaro consists of 10 double rondavels each with 2 double rooms
(2 suites, 3 rooms with queen size beds and 15 twin rooms.)
Honeymoon suites are also available. The Main House has 4 luxury
rooms with king size beds.
Guests staying at the Kilemakyaro Mountain Lodge have a range of
facilities at their disposal, including Satellite TV and Telephone,
Bar and Restaurant, and seminar facilities.
A swimming pool, health spa, and conference center are currently
under construction.
The Lodge is conveniently located in Moshi, being a 60 min. drive
from Kilimanjaro International Airport.
