Minister launches new courses at CDTI Tengeru

by Valentine Marc Nkwame

Almost four decades after being established in 1966, then dealing with only one field of training, the Tengeru-based, Community Development Training Institute (CDTI) has now launched two new courses.

The new Advanced Diploma in Gender and Development together with Advanced Diploma in Project Planning and Management were officially launched by the Minister for Community Development, Gender and Children, Dr. Asha-Rose Migiro (MP).

The college Principal, Salum Selenge, said the introduction of the new courses have increased the number of students from 213 to the current 378, adding that by the 2005-2006 academic year, CDTI would be catering for over 700 students.

The ceremony to mark this occasion also went hand in hand with the inauguration of new dormitory, built by the Engineering Department of National Service (JKT) in a period of only five weeks.

Built at the cost of Tsh.50 million, the four-storey structure, consisting of 30 boarding rooms, each with a capacity of housing four students, four toilet facilities and four baths, christened "Meru Dorm" will cater for female trainees at the college.

The JKT Engineer, Captain Z. M. Msangi said the dormitory was being built day and night to beat the deadline, but the actual project was started in 1982 by a different contractor who however left it prematurely.

Apart from the new dormitory, CDTI is also working on the college water project, in which a 150-metre deep, water well topped with some 60,000 litre, capacity tanks is both being drilled and constructed to solve the institution’s water problems.

Principal Selenge future plans also include mass promotional campaigns, college expansion and launching the CDTI college prospectus in the next academic year 2004-2005.

Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Community Development, Gender and Children, Shamim Khan, the Chairman of the Community Development Committee in the National Assembly, Sophia Simba and the ‘shadow’ community development minister in the Opposition side (UDP), Tedi Kasela Bantu also attended the ceremony early this week.
