Former Tanzanian prime Minister, the late Edward Moringe Sokoine.

Facelift for Sokoine grave yard in Monduli

National Service (JKT) pay tribute to the departed hero

Two shining bronze lions, crouching on either sides of a symbolic high tower, will mark the front entrance to the newly constructed structure that now houses the burial place of the former Tanzanian prime Minister, the late Edward Moringe Sokoine.

Built by the Engineering Department of National service (JKT), the new brick walled and tile roofed structured replaces the former, metal rod supported corrugated iron roofing which used to shelter Sokoine’s grave.

National Service’s Chief Engineer for the Northern Zone, Zwahir Mwidadi Msangi, said the project is being done in three phases all estimated to cost a total of Tsh.11 million.

“We are going to replace these symbolic lions with other shinny, bronze ones”, said Captain Msangi, adding that Sokoine’s portrait will also be fixed at the entrance tower.

The first phase of construction is done and for the remaining two phases, JKT builders will demolish the surrounding low fence, before erecting a new one to mark the almost 90 feet square burial plot, which is now set to become the Sokoine family burial yard.

“There was no official drawing”, said Captain Msangi. “I designed all this myself, under the directives of the former premier’s widow!”

Mrs Napono Sokoine (63), wants the burial place of her husband to now cater for the entire family. She has six children and five grand children, while her co-wife, Mrs Nekiteto Sokoine has five children and five grand children.

Nekiteto however, currently resides at Makuyuni but Napono, who is the elder wife, lives at her husband’s house in Monduli.

Born in 1938 on the 1st of August, Edward Moringe Sokoine died in a road accident on the 12th of April 1984.

He was admired by many due to his unfaltering stand in the war against corruption. He was a staunch statesman.
