Give reckless drivers a ‘thorough beating!’

As the region was celebrating the climax of the Road Safety Week, reports of numerous road accidents overwhelmed the Traffic Police Department. Invariably, people of all walks of life blame drivers for the accidents.

The Government may have ordered all passenger vehicles to be fixed with speed regulating devices, but as long as irresponsible drivers are still running amok, the directive will remain useless. Most drivers here have driving licenses without first getting the required proper training. Others drive for a long period of time thus getting choked by fatigue. We should find a way of checking drivers.

The Government can still control local drivers and bring accident toll under control.

In Arusha, we have this problem of tractors with trailers, which lack back lights and other forms of illumination, being driven at night and getting parked recklessly.

There is also the question of cattle being herded at night to escape municipal officials and these also cross the road at dusk causing accidents.

We were relieved when the Government recently called out all the drivers with licenses which were obtained through dubious arrangements to return the documents immediately.

Most town bus drivers fall under this category, they are not qualified but bus owners let them drive their vehicles as they pay these fellows little amounts of money.
