Woman accused dumping baby into pit latrine

By Happy Lazaro

It was a close escape from mob justice for a woman resident of Majengo, who in the course of last week, entered a bathroom/toilet while pregnant, but when she came out later, the pregnancy had disappeared.

Her neighbours who wanted to beat her up said the woman, Asia Yasin (20) had gone to deliver her baby in the toilet/bathroom secretly, after which, she dumped the baby into the latrine hole.

Regional Police Commander, James Kombe confirmed that when her neighbours checked into the toilet, a newly born baby was seen inside the pit latrine.

Angry neighbours were on the verge of beating up the suspect but good Samaritans summoned the police who went to the scene and saved the woman.

Asia was however arrested and taken to the central police station where she pleaded that, the baby had accidentally fallen into the toilet pit after she had suddenly delivered it, while attending a call of nature.

Hospital examinations which were conducted later, indicated that the accused had delivered prematurely, since the baby was only six months old.

The baby, survived for only a few hours and died at the hospital.
