Exploring Mother Nature

Exploring Mother Nature

May 2003

This month two DStv channels – National Geographic and the Discovery Channel will not only remind viewers about the beauty of human birth but explore the wonderful creatures brought to us by mother nature.

Following on from the success of its predecessor, the critically acclaimed WORLD BIRTH DAY, which was broadcast on Discovery Channel around the world, WORLD BIRTH DAY 2003 (Sunday May 11 @ 21:00 CAT) captures the drama of childbirth from various countries across the globe.

The result is an emotional and fascinating glimpse into childbirth practices in Kabul, Afghanistan; Vladivostok, Russia; Empangeni, South Africa; Hiroshima, Japan; Cordoba, Argentina; Bombay, India; Belfast and Memphis, USA. The locations selected are designed to bring to viewers the widest possible range of human experience. In this programme, viewers will see not only the cultures with which they are familiar, they will experience the world through the eyes of people who are very different – but who are sharing, on one special day, the most profound and universal human experience. In the years to come, the channel hopes to get the opportunity to revisit these children.

Whilst pondering on the wonders of birth, on Saturday May 3 @ 20:00 CAT, go on a great wildlife adventure with award winning actress JULIA ROBERTS as she meets the last few remaining gentle red apes under siege on the Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Borneo – ORANG UTANS.

"Amidst the noise and confusion of New York it’s hard to imagine what life was like thousands of years ago, before it all became so complex and crowded, but I’m about to travel to another world to try and find a simpler way of life," the Hollywood star stated.

Her journey takes her to the island of Borneo, part of the chain of islands that make up Indonesia. Somewhere in its vast, tropical rainforest she’s going to look for a creature that lives very much in the same way as our ancestors did, a reminder of our prehistoric past.

Then on Friday May 2 @ 23:00 CAT take a deep breath and join British world champion free diver, Tanya Streeter on the National Geographic as she dives to depths of 90m in a single breath, for the first time ever in cold New Zealand waters.

During X-FORCE: DIVING Tanya enlists the help of world-class deep-divers Dave Apperley, Pete Mesley and Welshman Tim Cashman, before they embark on their own extreme-diving feat, to explore the wreck of RMS Niagara.

In 2002 British World Champion Freediver Tanya Streeter broke both the women and men's No Limits Freediving World Record and this year she's preparing for her latest assault on the record books in the Turks and Caicos Islands in July. If she's successful, Tanya will make aquatic history. No man or woman has ever attempted to break all deep Freediving World Records.

Millions of migrating wildebeest make an incredible 3,000km trek across Africa each year. On Friday May 9 @ 19:00 CAT, follow Hayden Turner as he attempts to capture this incredible wildlife spectacle on film in WILDLIFE CHALLENGE: WILDEBEEST. Viewers will check Hayden out as he quickly discovers that the animals are as unpredictable as the weather, even with the help of a Masai guide, a hot-air balloon and $1,000 in his pocket. Will Hayden get close enough to complete his Wildlife Challenge?

Lastly, brave underwater cameraman Göran Ehlme dives into icy waters to encounter a huge leopard seal, one of the largest predators of the Antarctic, during the show LEOPARD SEAL: LORD OF THE ICE on Sunday May 18 @ 21:00 CET. On land they may appear cute but underwater these vicious carnivores use their large, reptile-like heads, gaping jaws and bladed teeth to feast on their prey. They even attack humans. On Goran's first dive he anxiously holds the camera between himself and the seals' snapping jaws. But he's soon accepted and surprisingly a seal offers him a dead penguin caught specially for him.

Ends.
