‘Privatization’ of parking areas a welcome move but ...

The Arusha
Municipal Council is taking steps toward privatizing fee collection in Arusha’s
vehicle parking areas. Some people are puzzled by the move because, they say,
parking lots are yet to be created.
Maybe if
private individuals or companies takeover the town parking system some things
might change for the better. For instance, this long standing bad condition of
the local mini bus stand may get a lasting solution with some good repairs.
For many
years we have been sending AKIBOA officials to the Municipal Council to address
this issue but to no avail.
Actually,
why shouldn’t the council just award the tender to AKIBOA? They are likely to
do a better job.

We have
read in newspapers that our Municipal Council is now looking for individuals or
companies to take care of vehicle parking in Arusha. I hope this includes also
the bus terminals. The exercise will only bear fruits, if the Arusha and
Kilimanjaro Bus Operators (AKIBOA) are involved in the planning.

Whoever
that is going to take over the vehicle parking project must first have a
specially constructed parking lots. For instance, the mini bus terminal is in
pathetic condition it doesn’t even look like a bus stand and certainly not for
an international town like Arusha.

It think
it was too early to float such as tender. So far parking areas are
non-existent. The municipal Council has first to create parking areas and then
look for agents to run them. I am puzzled by their move to privatize something
that does not exist.
