Arusha Twigas retain hockey championshipby Edmund Mganga in Tanga Twigas Hockey team of Arusha has once more emerged the champions of hockey this year by winning the 2002 Hockey Revolutionary cup bonanza held in Tanga region from January 11 to 13th . A total of seven teams out of the registered nine, played in the Revolution cup games that took place at Popatlal and Annadil Burhan grounds in Tanga. Eight matches were played, the first being between Twigas and Barat of Tanga which was a 1-1 draw match. Twigas also thrashed Zanzibar team 6-0 in a second game while Tanga Institute beat Alhilal 2-1 in the third match. The hosts, Burhan team of Tanga played against TPDF in a fourth game thrashing the TPDF soldiers 2-1. However, the angry soldiers braced themselves and as a result, TPDF blew off Burhan 8-0 in their replay of the fifth match. The incumbent Twigas returned in a match against TPDF in which Twigas thrashed the soldiers 3-0 in the sixth game. From there, on penalties in which Tanga Institute won 3 penalties against Alhilal’s 2. Twigas also won 4 penalties against Barat who scored only 1 penalty goal. However, Barat managed a penalty victory over Tanga Institute by beating it 1-0. The final match was between the incumbent Twigas of Arusha, who were also the defending 2001 champions and their hosts, Barat team of Tanga. As usual, Twigas were in their best form and displayed an extremely outstanding talent (except for one occasion in which one of their players was given a red card). The match ended with Twigas scoring 7 goals against the measly one goal scored by Barat. Guest of honour, Anil Amin who is the Tanga regional representative of Coral Paints company presented the winners with trophies and medals. Coral Paints were the official sponsors of the Hockey bonanza. |
