Centre braces to provide cost effective modern technology

The formal opening of the first Cisco course in Tanzania aimed at establishing Cisco Local Networking Academy Program was held on January 19 at Sakina west of Arusha municipality.

The following is a brief history of the company and a summary of its activities as presented by Professor D. Mkude.

The University Computing Centre (UCT) Limited is a limited liability company incorporated on 25^th January, 2001. The Centre, which has been in existence for some years, has hitherto operated as a semi autonomous department under the University but without a separate legal status. Currently, the company is fully owned by the University of Dar es Salaam but the public should be able to participate in ownership if plans to open it up are finalized .

The company is involved in various aspects of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

First and foremost, UCC Ltd is an Internet Service Provider i.e. Internet/E-mail Service, Web design and Hosting.

Secondly, UCC is involved in Software development and System Integration, which includes Systems analysis and design, Database design and implementation and Information Systems Planning and Management.

Network design, installation and management is another main area of UCC’s activities.

The company is also a training centre for Information and Communication Technologies covering various common business applications - word, Excel, Internet/E-mail, Power Point presentation program, etc and also technical software packages like Desktop publishing, AutoCAD, SPSS etc.

It specializes in ICT professional training and offers long term courses leading to International qualifications like Cisco, Microsoft, Oracle, JAVA etc, the Centre is involved in a number of ICT consultancies.

To ensure that Tanzania is not left behind in the much talked trend of digital divide, UCC Ltd is committed to providing cost effective modern technology to the Tanzania business community and the general public. As the world gradually but surely moves to a global village, it is imperative that Tanzania in general and the business community in particular, is well placed to fully reap the benefits of the new information age. The Cisco Local Networking Academy Program we have today is part of the process of strategically positioning Tanzania for this eventuality.

As pioneers of ICT in Tanzania , UCC Ltd remains the market leader in this crucial field of Information and Communication Technology. Our highly qualified and well-drilled staff give us the much needed competitive edge in the market.

In all our operations, the customer has remained the central focus and the aim has always been to more than fully meet the expectations.

The UCC has, since its inception, operated largely from its head office in Dar es Salaam. This has however tendered to marginalize the regions outside Dar. Effective mid year 2001, UCC started opening branches in upcountry stations with Arusha being the first one. Dodoma followed soon thereafter and plans for more branches are in the pipeline. This is part of the overall strategy of UCC of taking services nearer our customers. In fact we realize that the dangers of the digital divide will never be fully contained unless and until every part of Tanzania has an efficient and affordable access tot he Internet.

Although primarily established to do business, UCC Ltd is committed to serving the community in which it operates.
