Ball boys display amazing skills in tennis tournamentBy staff reporter For two days last week, sixteen boys aged between 10 and 15 years sweated it our at the AICC Kijenge Tennis Club courts to get the winner of what was christened the "Ball Boys November Tennis Tournament."
The boys, who normally collect balls when veteran players are practising and playing at the Club, decided it was time to put into practice what they had learnt from the experience of watching and assisting the veterans. Under the supervision of bigger boys cum umpires - Erick Wilfred, Musa Juma, Suta Boniface and Kelvin Nicholaus - the boys began their knockout tournament on the morning of Saturday 16 November and in the afternoon of the next day. Erick Mdee (Magufuli) won the tournament after beating Amedeus (6-2, 7-5). The tournament sponsored by Danford Mpumilwa, an employee of the UN-ICTR and a squash player at the same Club, saw Erick pocket 7,000/- and Amedeus 5,000/-. The third winner, Boniface, pocketed 3,000/-. Other participants received soft drinks. Mr. Mpumilwa told the boys that the prizes were aimed at encouraging youth to take up the game and sports in general, which was an important supplement to education. He said another tournament for the ball boys will be organised early next year and promised to seek the assistance of other institutions and companies to co-sponsor it. Those who took part in the tournament are Ramadhani, Leonard, Jackson, Chrispin, Goodluck, Injicky, Shaaban, Deogratius, Richard, Seuri, Innocent, Mjata and Joram. The guest of honour who handed over the prizes was Prof. Karim Hirji, a prominent natural scientist, based in Arusha. |
