East African Golf Challenge tees of on Sundayby a correspondent Top notch golfers from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania will be vying for the East African Golf Challenge Trophy to be played at the Arusha Gymkhana Club under the auspices of the Tanzania Golf Union from Sunday, September 15th to Tuesday, September 17th, 2002. Each of the teams will consist of a team manager/coach, eight players and one reserve. According to the Arusha Gymkhana Club, Golf Captain, Beatus Kasegenya, the Secretary General of the East African Community, Amanya Mushega would be the guest of honour of the tournament. The closing ceremony on Tuesday will be officiated by the Minister of Labour, Youth Development and Sports, Juma Kapuya. The tournament to be played over 18 holes of scratch is being sponsored by Tanzania Breweries. The tournament committee charged with making overall decisions relating to the contest consists of Leonard Kiwara, Beatus Kasegenya, Lt. Gen. Gideon Sayore, Jatin Sonecha, Foti Gwebe, Rafik Meghji and one representative each from the Kenya Golf Union and Uganda Golf Union. According to the play schedule released by the tournament convener, Rafik Meghji, Single Match Play will feature on Sunday, September 15th; Four Ball Better Ball and Foursomes Match Play on Monday, September 16th; and Single Match Play on Tuesday, September 17th. A gala dinner will cap the tournament. Meanwhile, the Tanzania amateur open stroke will be played at the same venue from 19th - 22nd September. Professional golfers from the three East African countries are expected to participate. |
