Fabiano tops Rift Valley bicycle race

Lucas Fabiano from Manyara region has topped the Rift Valley bicycle race which took place in Karatu district on Sunday, the 8th of September.

Fabiano covered the 60-kilometre distance race in 2 hours and 28 minutes, winning a brand new Phoenix bicycle and Tsh.10,000 in cash.

Hot in his tracks was a Babati cyclist, Tulimbo Malley who used 2 hours and 29 minutes winning an Avon bicycle with Tsh.10,000.

The third winner was Said Juma, from Arusha municipality who used 2 hours 38 minutes and was awarded Tsh.20,000.

A special cash prize of Tsh.10,000 went to Hitii Bura who braved the race despite being one legged. The event attracted a total of 35 sportsmen from Arusha municipality, Mbulu, Babati and Karatu, the hosting district.

State Minister in the Office of the President, in-charge of Civil Servants, Mary Nagu was the guest of honour at the bicycle race which was organized by the Arusha based Z. B. Promotions.

Nagu launched a special harambee to raise money for the handicapped cyclist, Bura, who got Tsh.80,000 from the fund raising.

Main sponsors of the event were Jumbo Mills, Moonlight Bar of Babati, A to Z, Kase Book Stores and bulk Distributors.

The event coordinator, Zuberi Mwinyi said a similar event is scheduled to take place on the 30th of November 2002 and the cyclists will ride the 80 kilometres from Arusha to Moshi and back (160 km).
