Street Talk

Chaos still the order of the day in Nyamwezi

Despite efforts by the Arusha municipal Council to restore law and order in Arusha Streets, Nyamwezi Street south of the Central marketplace is as disorderly as ever. Shop owners and residents of the area have consistently been complaining about the hawkers’ invasion but to no avail.

There are plenty of problems in this street, all being caused by vendors displaying their wares on pavements. Customers cannot even shop with ease in fact they can’t get past the vendors to come into our stores.

Cart pullers also park their carts along the street hindering motorists and blocking car parking spaces. Mind you, shoppers especially women, fear congested areas thus customers are usually driven away.

There is so much chaos around here especially in the morning, you can’t even open up your shop as the vendors usually block the entrances.

We are forced to open our businesses late when the unruly crowd has finally subsided. The people usually leave this place in a mess.

Council’s efforts in shifting the traders to Kilombero have only helped in taking lorries out of here, but we still face problems with vendors.

As business people of Nyamwezi Street, we really suffer in the  morning and evening hours as these vendors prevent us from either opening or closing our shops.

Mind you, they also hurl insults whenever we request them to give way. To compound the insults,   they always leave mounds of garbage in their trails.

We don’t hate them but they just don’t seem to follow proper regulations, we appeal to the council to give these people  alternative places for their trade.

The situation is usually at its worst at around 7 a.m. all the way to 10.00 a.m. in the morning as vendors would spread vegetables, second-hand clothes, fruits and other merchandise along the shop corridors hindering our businesses.

Whenever the customers come to shop, these vendors start yelling at them thus driving most people away.

Of course the council tries to deal with them, but these vendors are very cunning on that, they wait for the time when council officers are off duty and resume their chaotic stuffs.

The council should fix permanent people to watch over the area throughout, since chaos starts again after 4.00 p.m.
