Rotary Club builds dormitory for street girls

by Maria Salome of SAUT

The Rotary Club of Arusha has constructed a special dormitory to house recently rescued, local street girls now being taken care of by the Children for Children’s Future (CCF) centre, at Maji ya Chai area of Arumeru district.

The Maji ya Chai Centre,  CCF manager, Remmy Jacob Kaaya said  that the Rotary Club has also donated beds, bedding materials such as blankets, bed sheets and mosquito nets for the girls.

The new dormitory can accommodate up to 50 girls but  the centre has eight girls, two of whom are currently attending Longido primary boarding school.

CCF, which has been dealing with mostly street boys has  decided to start including street girls in their programme since their  numbers  in the town streets are escalating.

According to Kaaya, street girls face more danger than boys since they are much weaker thus prone to sexual harassment or prostitution  that makes them vulnerable to sexually  transmitted diseases (STD) and the deadly HIV-AIDS infections.
