Kimaro offers inexpensive English medium education to slum childrenBy Maria Salome Augustine of SAUT As more education facilities get established, still Mr. Pasian Kimaro has decided to launch an almost charitable kindergarten school to provide inexpensive but good education quality for the poor residents of Arusha living in the slum areas of Sinon, Unga limited and Sokon One Wards. Run by the Rafiki Trust, in which Kimaro is a member and being assisted by the “Friends of Tanzania schools” Shinda basic school aims at providing the best English medium education to the children of local residents at the low sum of only Tsh.3,000 per month. The amount paid by parents/guardians is used for tea/porridge whereby other facilities like building furniture and library are obtained in form of aid and mostly through fund raising campaigns. Shinda Basic School, located in Oljavutian area of Sokon one ward, admits children of up to five years old all of whom being taught English, Mathematics, Science, General and Environmental knowledge plus health care. It also boasts the best equipped library in the municipality. Speaking in his office, Mr. Kimaro said that despite several problems he has been facing, he will keep on courageously for what he does is good and helpful. He admits to have encountered land problems, lack of cooperation from local residents one of which resulted into vandalizing of property a case currently being handled in court. Shinda Basic school teachers are usually local and international volunteers some of whom are Kimaro’s own students. Kimaro gives Swahili courses to foreigners who either visit or come to work in Arusha. As a humanist, the teacher believes that only education will save the future of Tanzanian children. |
