Child labour and violation of children's rights are a problem that has been increasing both in scope and intensity despite efforts of the government and non-governmental organizations to fight the social ill.  What is the solution?

by Raymond John

My observations have revealed that, children living with foster parents or relatives suffer most as far as the breach of children rights are concerned, plus their abuse.

Women especially, contribute a lot in harassing the children when their husbands are out of home thus forcing most children to run away and seek employment elsewhere.

Apparently we don’t have children workers in local factories or building construction companies.

However, child labour cases are still rampant in households where most of them usually secure employments. When you visit mining areas, you will find children but they will claim that they are not working there, so it’s difficult to tell.

Child labour is indeed rampant in various local households where children get paid a measly salary of between Tsh.5,000 and Tsh.7,000 a month.

We get many cases of this nature, most affecting children from poor families who are ready to even work for food.

If the toils of life will still be the same, then it is useless to even think that child labour will ever end.

Currently, primary education may be free, but children still need money for uniforms, facilities and other basics forcing them out of school and into labour market.

Here in Mererani mines, children aged around 12 years known as “Nyoka” (snakes) are the ones to carry quarry sand, buy cigarettes,  fetch water and work in various food joints.

Maybe the government should start educating the mass on the hazards of child labour, and benefits of family planning.
