Maasai focused Orkonerei Radio Service to be launched in Simanjiro

A  Maasai oriented  radio station will be launched  in Simanjiro District next month.

The Orkonerei Radio service (ORS) which is based in the Terrat ward of Simanjiro in the new Manyara region is set to broadcast throughout the six  regions of Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Manyara, Tanga, Singida and Dodoma.

Set to be officially launched by the Vice President of Tanzania, Dr. Ali Mohammed Shein, on the first of July this year, Orkonerei radio project, which started in 1999 has cost over Tsh.186 million.

Project coordinator, Mary Labdaky said the ORS station will be broadcasting in English and Kiswahili languages but also put much emphasis in traditional Maasai songs, religious choirs mixed with pop music.

According to Labdaky, the non governmental organisation of Ilaramatak Lorkonerei which runs the station with financial assistance from the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA),the radio may also broadcast in Maasai language.

The coordinator added that broadcasting in Maasai language will only start after the Tanzania Broadcasting Commission (TBC) have given them the permission.

Orkonerei Radio Service will mostly air educational programmes which will be addressing gender issues, environmental development projects in relation to the pastoralist communities and also provide cultural entertainment.
