US volunteers set up HIV-AIDS camps in local schoolsBy Arusha Times Reporters A total of 50 American volunteers under the International Health Programme of the newly established Global Service Corps (GSC), are in Arusha conducting four HIV-AIDS prevention camps for local secondary school students. The camps, which started early this month, have been set up at Arusha Secondary School, Arusha Day, Edmund Rice and St. Constantine’s International School. According to the International Health Programme Coordinator, Tina Wu, about 300 Form Three students from the said schools will benefit from the educational programmes being provided in those camps. In collaboration with Community Aid and Small Enterprises Consultancy (CASEC) together with local school teachers the Global Service Corps are running day camps with a wide range of creative, experiential learning activities punctuated with games, music and drama. GSC will also be providing sustainable, small-scale agriculture training, income generation skills, importance of nutrition, in addition to HIV-AIDS awareness training. The day camp programme also includes the training of over 200 secondary school teachers in HIV-AIDS prevention, visiting AIDS victims in local hospitals and HIV-AIDS orphans. Medical experts from America, such as Dr. Richard Mallory, a psychotherapist with private practice in New York City will conduct a two week training in counseling. Also, Professor Robert Siegel from Stanford University of California is expected to jet in next month to share his knowledge in health education in less developed countries. The camps will go on until Sunday the 21st of July this year. Additional day camps are being planned for other schools in different parts of Arusha - during Christmas and “Summer” school breaks in future. The Arusha secondary school camp will climax with a grand performance on Thursday June 27th, in which all members of the community are being invited to attend. There will be music, dancing, drama, games and art presentations. The Edmund Rice secondary school camp which started in June 12th will fold on July 12th on the day when another camp at Arusha Day secondary which also started on the same dates is expected to climax. As from July the 10th,the St. Constantine’s International school camp will kickoff with July volunteers and will go on up to the 21st of July. Among the camp coordinators are Nikki Butcher - Katie Tanner and Tina Wu, who in conjunction with local teachers such as Pelle Shaibu, Huruma Sakafu, Winnie Johnson and Elizabeth Masamu (Hostel matron at Arusha secondary) will keep the ball rolling. The Arusha secondary second mistress, Lucy Masao and senior academic mistress, Rebecca Mmbaga said that the camp programmes are invaluable. The two senior teachers added that camp activities have helped bridge the gap between them and the students who have opened up and started to confide in them. GSC camps however, have only Form Three students most of them range in age between 15 and 17 years.
