Education subsidy

Education subsidy sparks controversy in Karatu

by Pamela Elisante

The government subsidy disbursed to schools has sparked a controversy in Karatu District.

Eight  residents of Mang'ola have been apprehended  by the Karatu District

police for allegedly going ahead in constructing a classroom  said to have been erroneously earmarked for subsidy by district authorities.

The residents  were apprehended  following an order of the Karatu District

Commissioner, Lieutenant Abdallah Kihato after discovering anomalies in disbursement.

The Acting District Education Officer, Mr. Msuya told  reporters  that among those apprehended , three were members of the school committee while others were individuals who claimed  to be members of the construction committee.

Mr. Msuya mentioned those who were in  police custody  as Martin Leonard, Daudi Mpanda, Sangiwa George and Hamadi Masimba.  Others were Peter Shaduma, Rumay Momoya, Gidmangure Makrija and Monica Samwel.

Msuya said  that earlier, the District Commissioner ordered Shs. 700,000/= to be returned to the coffers  since it was erroneously issued for  the purchase of building materials.  However, because the materials had already been  brought to the village, he ordered that they  have to be  taken to  other schools.

Since the Government subsidy for school buildings was disbursed to Karatu District, there has been an exchange of verbal fireworks between District officers  over the expenditure of morethan Shs. 133 million.
