By Raja Jivraj Parking fees- a blessing The recently introduced parking fee in most of Arusha’s streets has at least reduced the number of vehicles usually parked haphazardly all over town. Conspicuously missing is the white van along Boma Road from which live chicken were being sold from daybreak to late afternoon. But, the owner of a ten-tonne truck usually packed opposite the Lutheran Church hasn’t been bothered yet by the fee. Nonetheless, the introduction of the fee has been a blessing mostly to the Arusha’s District Commissioner. The park adjacent to the District block is free for all. The red dull office bloc now seems a beehive of activities, at least from the outside. *** Colony of flies A reader wrote to the Arusha Times recently complaining about the colony of flies in Njiro where the Municipal dump is located. He hadn’t seen anything yet. There’s a restaurant along Nairobi-Moshi road that beats them all. This is in terms of flies hovering over the tables. The first time I went to the restaurant I complained to the manager who thought that was rude as no one else was complaining. I did not know that all the patrons are used to the menace of flies. In fact, patrons go to the place for the same reason that flies do: Fish, chicken, beef, hooves, etc. Among the patrons I found enjoying their meals there are municipal health officials. *** Panga Club People are starved of business ideas in Arusha. They wait for an enterprise to open then they all copy the idea. There were hardly any Makuti clubs in Arusha until people saw the Maasai Camp innovative idea. The Shooters Club is yet another innovation in Arusha. Its walls are adorned with replicas of old guns and photographs of people who have handled guns (or may be their victims). I particularly liked the photograph of Samwel Baker 17-1b rifle made in 1848. The bullets used then are astounding. A local entrepreneur, I was with last Sunday at the club thought he had finally found a business idea: A Panga Club. He would adorn his club walls with all types of simes, pangas and spears. Such could be a popular club especially in Unga Limited and Ngarenaro areas. The problem, however, that I foresee is getting a license. *** No difference The Government has announced its intention to split Arusha region into two in view of its vast size. May be one of the regions will be known as Arusha and the other Rift Valley. The decision has already given idle people what to talk about. There seems to be concern that if Ngorongoro district is not placed under the administration of Arusha region then conservation of natural resources would be doomed. Gibberish. Laws guarding conservation would still be the same. The only difference will be the name(s) of regional commissioners. Animals will still be shot at with relish . It’s only Kenya that has the guts to say no to plunder of wildlife. |
