Norway supports EAC

 

Norway pledges support to EAC

A delegation of the Norwegian Ambassadors accredited to the East African
countries visited the EAC Secretariat in Arusha on 5 March 2002 and held
discussions with the Deputy Secretary General (Projects and Programmes) of
the East African Community, Ambassador Fulgence Kazaura; and the Deputy
Secretary General (Finance and Administration), Dr. Kipyego Cheluget.
 
The Norwegian delegation was comprised of the Ambassador of Norway to
Tanzania, H.E. Mrs. Sigrid Romundset, who was the Leader of the delegation,
the Ambassador of Norway to Kenya, H.E. Mr. Kjell Harald Dalen and the
Ambassador of Norway to Uganda, H.E. Mr. Tore F. Gjos.

The Deputy Secretary General  (Projects and Programmes), of the East African Community, Ambassador Fulgence Kazaura presents EAC scarf and tie to H.E. Mrs. Sigrid Romundset, Ambassador of Norway to Tanzania who led the delegation of Norwegian Ambassadors to the EAC.  Looking on is the Deputy Secretary General (Finance and Administration), Dr. Kipyego Cheluget.

The Deputy Secretary General (Projects and Programmes), Ambassador Kazaura
briefed the delegation on recent developments in the East African Community
noting that the Community is moving steadily and systematically towards the
realisation of regional integration and development objectives.  He said
there already exists broad harmonised policy framework for regional
development thus setting the stage for implementation of specific and
concrete projects in the period ahead.
 
The two sides discussed the EAC‑Norway co‑operation in the context of the
EAC's prioritised projects and programmes. On the existing co‑operation they
discussed the development of Infrastructure and the Lake Victoria
Development Programme (LVDP) where already Norway is signatory to the
Strategic Partnership Agreement and is currently funding the development of
the vision for the Lake Victoria Environment Management Project (LVEMP).
Other areas of co‑operation which were identified were support for the East
African Legislative Assembly, directly or through the European
Parliamentarians for Africa (AWEPA); funding of the EAC Secretariat's
Consultancy Fund; support for the development of the East African private
sector; development of regional co‑operation in the health sector, in
medical research as well as combating diseases which have cross border
manifestations or implications, including HIV/AIDS; strategy for
mainstreaming of gender perspectives in the regional integration and
development programme; and capacity building in the EAC Secretariat.
The Norwegian Ambassadors expressed their appreciation of the pragmatic and
functional integration approach adopted by the East African Community and
the good record of targets' realization by the regional organization. The
Ambassadors expressed Norway's commitment to support the development of the
East African Community. The Ambassadors will make follow up with EAC towards
formulation of general framework as well as specific projects and programmes
of EAC‑Norway co‑operation.
