Crime: Alleged causes and proposed remedy

Another ugly wave of crime is sweeping Arusha. While other residents think this is caused by the high rate of unemployment, some blame the lack of market for tanzanite.

by Raymond John

Life in Tanzania is very difficult nowadays and this, plus the fact that unemployment rate is getting higher day after day, are the main causes behind the current waves of crime.

Still there are people who do not like to work but want quick money. These usually embark on crime. Then there are other culprits who sabotage our companies, firms and institutions forcing them into bankruptcy and rendering thousands out of work.

Jesca  S. Mushi - Kijenge

Meager salaries and unreliable employment, among other things, highly contribute towards the current high crime rate. Why shouldn’t the youth be provided with loans to establish their own projects now that there are no hopes for employment.

The Government can also assist primary school leavers by either supporting their further pursuit of education or give them something to do.

Martha Sware - Kijenge

In Arusha, crime rate goes high whenever the Mererani mines become dormant like at the moment.

Also, when you keep chasing away petty traders from their places of business, chances are most of them will turn to crime.

The widespread use of cellular phones has  also help to fuel major crimes such as robberies and planned murder.

Curbing the influx of unchecked foreigners and refugees may be one step in curbing crime.

Demestan Moshi - Sanawari

Now we  have shops that deal with arms and ammunition and if these aren’t checked, then we are  getting into  big trouble as not everyone who buys a gun is law abiding.

Tougher and longer sentences for the culprits can be a good remedy for current rates of crime. However,  the Government needs to reinforce security.

Ezekiel Msigalla - Dar es Salaam.
