Disabled face discrimination in employmentby Nyamanoko Bwire Handicapped students of the Usa River Rehabilitation Centre which operates under the auspices of Meru Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania have asked the Parliamentary Women Development Committee to help shatter the stigma that has led to their denial of employment by various institutions and enterprises. The disabled students expressed their disappointment in a meeting with the Parliamentarians, who visited the centre to see the activities undertaken by the institution. The handicapped said that despite them being capable of doing office work and even making a variety of items such as furniture, the community still disregarded their efforts and were being despised whenever they went out to look for employment. Many organizations, they said, employ people, who are physically fit leaving them in dire condition, despite the fact that they have acquired the necessary skills in various fields. Their skills are adequate for self‑employment, but the obstacle is capital for establishing small enterprises, they said. They ask the Chairman of the Committee, Mrs. Halima Kimbau to present their petition to the National Assembly so that their problem could be solved. Earlier, the Vice Principal of the Centre, Miss Sofia Moshi informed the parliamentarians that his Centre has a committee which visits the handicapped in the villages. Most of the handicapped, they found out , are illiterate. The Centre has a capacity to accommodate and cater for 60 students. |
