Robbery victim speaks of incidentby Nassib Majamba The surviving victim of last Monday street robbery, in which one person was killed and over Tsh.13 Million in cash stolen, has recounted the incident to the Arusha Times. Mustapha Saad, who is an employee of the hardware company of Bulk Distributors Limited, was one of the two persons carrying money from the company premises near Ngarenaro to the Standard Chartered Bank using a Toyota Corolla TZA 386.
He and the deceased, Hubert Chaimah (54) who was the Administrative Manager of Bulk Distributors Ltd, were driving via a less busy road in the Makao Mapya area. According to Saad, they had hardly covered 250metres from their offices when another car, a Peugeot 505 number ARQ 864 approached them and braked head on. “A man got out of the vehicle and came to our car then demanded the money”, said Saad, adding that at the same point, five more thugs emerged from a lorry parked nearby and shot Chaimah in the back. Saad then threw open the car door and took to his heels amid a shower of bullets, one missing him by a very close shave. The bandits then jumped into their car, the Peugeot 505 and sped off taking with them Tsh.13.091 Million cash and bank cheques amounting to Tsh.12 Million. Turning back, Saad found his mate Chaimah laying down with gushes of blood coming through both his nose and mouth. Asking for assistance from people nearby, Saad was met with cold responses prompting him to run back to their offices and got another car in which he rushed Chaimah to hospital. However, the Administrative Manager died before reaching Mount Meru hospital. The Managing Director of Bulk Distributors Limited, Rajab Nurbhai said Chaimah was buried on the 27th of February 2002 in their home area of Mbozi in Mbeya region. Arusha Regional Police Commander (RPC) Placid Chaka said the police are still hunting for the robbers said to have been a team of eight.
